We decided that we could make it up to the family cottage this year, at the last minute. Luke is 4 1/2 weeks and proving to be a pretty good car rider. Also, this is our last opportunity to go to our favorite place and to see some family. Lots of people are anxious to meet him.

We took off on Friday afternoon at about 12:30pm. We made it in to the Cottage (on Torch Lake, Michigan) by about 9:30 PM after stopping twice. The first time, Luke started to get noisy just as we were entering a cunstruction area about 20 miles south of Grand Rapids. Fearing that we wouldn’t make it to a rest stop in time and seeing that traffic was at a standstill, we simply pulled over to the side and executed a diaper change, feeding, etc. Just as we were finishing up, a cop pulled up behind us, lights going, to check things out. Once he saw Luke, he realized what was going on. No matter, we were done anyway.

The next time we had to stop was in Cadillac. Somehow, we ended up in the back of the Save-A-Lot parking lot, which did not afford us the most flattering view of Cadillac. As much as I love Michigan and have an idyllic view of it’s landscape and people, you don’t have to go far off the beaten path to see real, widespread poverty.

We also head through Bellaire, MI just before reaching our destination. Michael Moore lives nearby and is premeiring his new movie, Capitalism, A Love Story in the tiny theatre there.  He also premeired Sicko there a couple years ago.
