We are interviewing (I guess) our first pediatrician on Tuesday.  It’s an odd process, but I guess something we’re supposed to do.  We took a class last week about it and the teacher went on for fifteen minutes with really only one message: Find Someone You Like.  I guess it makes sense as I think about it.  It’s extremely unlikely that in the basic care of a baby that any unusual problems will occur that any average pediatrician won’t recognize (fingers crossed) and be unable to treat.  In other words, you don’t need the next Nobel Prize winner — you need someone that you like, your child likes (eventually) and that listens to you.

The problem with me is that I’m sure the first person we meet will be just fine.  However, we should meet with a few others just because.  And there is the location factor — in Oak Park, we’re only 20 minutes from downtown Chicago but having a pediatrician in Oak Park would be more like a five minute commute.  As new parents who will probably struggle mightily with the car seat and stroller for a while, that might be a great asset.
